Queens, NY- In front of a sellout crowd at Carnesecca Arena, Shamoire Ponds led the Red Storm to a third straight win, dropping a career best 44 points in the process.
A week after taking down the fourth ranked Blue Devils and top ranked Villanova Wildcats, the Red Storm continued their hot streak by handling Marquette in a great contest.
The atmosphere was electric, as Carnesecca Arena was jam-packed and rocking all afternoon. Shamoire Ponds dropped an arena best, 44 points, and continued to carry the team.
“What he’s doing right now is simply remarkable, and he’s definitely already a St. John’s legend,” said alumni Ajay Vyas.
Indeed it is quite a spectacle, as Ponds is taking the college basketball world by storm, posting insane numbers in the process. Over the three game stretch, he’s averaging over 26 points per game.
“The best word to describe Ponds right now is…GOAT,” said Ian Rumsey, a fellow St. John’s student.
After the win over Duke, Chris Mullin told ESPN, “Thank God January is over,” and it seems as though the January woes have already been forgotten.
The Red Storm are now on a three game winning streak, and look to continue their inspired play as they have six crucial games remaining in the Big East.
If all goes well, the Johnnies can possibly have some postseason play awaiting them, with possible NIT berths and NCAA berths still at large.
However, the Johnnies cannot overlook the DePaul Demon Deacons this coming Wednesday, as the last time these teams met DePaul destroyed the Johnnies in a blowout win.
St. John’s looks to avenge the blowout loss against DePaul, with their sights on a four game winning streak looming large.
